One of the first things couples are faced with when they are planning for parenthood is how they will organize the baby furniture in their nursery. Some people will already know the sex of their baby when they begin this process but others will not. In either case you want to make sure that you consider all your options before making any final decisions.
A common way that people begin this process is by selecting a theme for the baby's room. Some themes that work for both boys and girls would be the ocean, jungle, animals, heaven, space, or the circus. An alternative to picking a specific theme would just to decide on a color scheme. Once that part is out of the way you can move on to actually picking the layout and furniture.

The main furniture pieces in a nursery should be your baby crib, changing table, book shelf, toy box, hamper, and dresser. Depending on the size of your space you may want to consider putting the crib in the center of the room. This works best with a round crib. For a rectangle crib you could instead have the crib positioned diagonally from a corner to provide the most amount of access from nearly every side. In either case you want to make sure that the crib is not near a window where the temperature would change the most. For your bookshelf you would be better off with a narrow, high shelf than a short and wide one in order to save the most room. Similarly you could get a dresser that doubles as a changing table to save even more room.
The final step for preparing your baby's nursery is making sure everything is baby proof. Be sure that all electrical outlets have been blocked. Consider bolting the dresser and book cases to the wall. If there is a window that is reachable that it has a secure lock that cannot be undone. Putting padding on any hard corners that the baby could come in contact with is always a good idea. If you have any stairs, be sure that you have a baby gate preventing access to that area of the house.
Getting everything prepared takes time so don't feel like you are getting started too early. You will always find something that you forgot and before you know it you baby will have arrived. All your hard work and preparation will be well worth it when you get to feel the reward of introducing your baby to their new room for the first time.
